What is IV sedation?
IV (intravenous) sedation is a form of moderate conscious sedation that uses medication delivered through a small IV line to help you feel deeply relaxed during dental treatment. With IV sedation, you remain breathing on your own and can respond to simple instructions, but most patients feel calm, comfortable, and have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.
At Arise Dental, IV sedation is an option for qualifying patients who need extra help feeling at ease or who are planning more involved procedures.
Who might benefit from IV sedation?
IV sedation can be especially helpful if you:
- Have high dental anxiety or fear of dental visits
- Have had difficult experiences with dental treatment in the past
- Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment challenging
- Need multiple procedures completed in a single visit
- Prefer to be very relaxed during longer or more complex appointments
Our team will review your medical history, medications, and treatment plan to determine whether IV moderate sedation is a safe and appropriate option for you.
How IV sedation works
IV sedation is provided right in our office on the day of your procedure.
- A small IV line is gently placed in your arm or hand.
- Sedation medication is delivered through the IV, helping you drift into a deeply relaxed, “twilight” state.
- Throughout your visit, we carefully monitor your breathing, heart rate, and comfort and can adjust the level of sedation as needed.
- When treatment is finished, the medication is stopped and you gradually become more alert. The effects wear off over the next several hours.
Because IV sedation can leave you feeling drowsy, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home after your appointment.
IV moderate sedation and safety
IV sedation is a well‑established option in dentistry and is considered safe when provided by trained professionals following appropriate guidelines. With a Level 3 permit for IV moderate sedation, Dr. Sharma is trained to provide this type of sedation in a controlled, monitored setting.
During your visit, our team:
- Reviews your medical history and any medications you take
- Monitors your vital signs before, during, and after sedation
- Uses incremental dosing to reach a comfortable level of relaxation while maintaining your ability to breathe on your own and respond to verbal cues
Your safety and comfort are always our top priorities.
What to expect before and after your visit
Before your IV sedation appointment, you will receive instructions about eating, drinking, and medications to make sure you are ready for a safe visit. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and talk through any concerns you may have.
After treatment:
- You will rest in the office until you are stable and ready to go home.
- A friend or family member will need to drive you home.
- Plan to take the rest of the day off to rest as the sedation fully wears off.
- We will provide written instructions so you know how to care for the area that was treated and what to expect as you recover.
Is IV sedation right for you?
If you’ve been putting off dental care because of anxiety, fear, or concerns about discomfort, IV sedation may help you receive the treatment you need in a more relaxed way. At your consultation, we can talk through your options and decide together whether IV moderate sedation is a good fit for your health, your needs, and your treatment plan.
