EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is a quick, painless part of every dental exam at Arise Dental that can identify early warning signs when they are most treatable.
Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, but survival rates drop significantly when the disease is diagnosed at a later stage. Because early oral cancer often has no symptoms that patients notice on their own, routine screening by a trained dental professional is one of the most valuable things we can do during your visit.

We welcome patients from across East Texas and include an oral cancer screening as a standard part of every comprehensive dental exam.

Oral cancer screening at Arise Dental

Oral Cancer Screening

At Arise Dental, screening for oral cancer is not an add-on service. It is a built-in part of your routine exam that takes only a few minutes and requires no special preparation on your part.

Your dentist performs a systematic visual and physical inspection of all soft tissue areas of the mouth, including the lips, inner cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, and the back of the throat. We also feel the lymph nodes in the neck for any irregularities that may warrant further evaluation.

A comfortable, patient-focused experience

Oral cancer screening is entirely non-invasive and painless. Most patients are not even aware it is happening as part of their exam. If anything appears unusual, we communicate clearly about what we found, what it may mean, and what we recommend next.

  • The screening is included in every comprehensive exam at no additional step for you
  • The process is non-invasive, quick, and completely painless
  • We explain any findings clearly and without unnecessary alarm
  • Referrals for further evaluation are made promptly when appropriate

Finding something worth looking at more closely is not a diagnosis. We handle these conversations with care and give you the information you need to make confident decisions.

Risk factors for oral cancer

While anyone can develop oral cancer, certain factors are associated with a higher risk. Knowing your risk level is useful context, though screenings are valuable for all patients regardless of risk.

Cases of oral cancer in patients with no obvious risk factors have been increasing, partly linked to HPV. This is one reason screening for everyone at every exam visit is standard practice at Arise Dental.

  • Tobacco use in any form including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco
  • Heavy or regular alcohol consumption
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
  • Prolonged sun exposure affecting the lips
  • A previous oral cancer diagnosis
  • Age over 40, though cases in younger adults are rising

What happens if something is found

Finding an area of concern during a screening does not mean you have cancer. Many unusual spots are completely benign. What it means is that we want to watch it closely or refer you for a specialist evaluation to be certain.

Any area in the mouth that does not resolve on its own within two to three weeks deserves professional attention. Prompt follow-through with any recommended evaluation is the most important step you can take.
